Cats are Crepuscular, meaning they are awake during the twilight hours, or dawn and dusk. Check it out! Did you think they were nocturnal like bats, or owls? Nope. Haven't you noticed your cat waking up at the crack of dawn and darting around like a maniac? Or perhaps your cat likes to beg for petting right when you need to be preparing for bed. That's because they're not nocturnal, they're Crepuscular, meaning they're awake at dawn and dusk. The domestic cat's wild ancestors once had to adapt to very harsh conditions. Hunting was a tricky job, because an unsuccessful hunt meant wasted time and energy. Too many unsuccessful hunts in a row could mean starvation. There was also the issue of the environmental dangers surrounding them. To make up for these inconveniences, cats developed a crepuscular time schedule. By sleeping during midday and midnight they were able to avoid the hot sun which might threaten dehydration, and they were able to avoid freezing to death in the middle of the night. This trait has survived all the way from the wild to your cute little kitty, but that doesn't mean they'd be opposed to a midnight snack. Did you know?
The majority of white cats aren't actually white at all. Check it out! White is technically not a color at all, but the lack thereof. A white cat is produced in a number of ways, the rarest of those being a true white cat, or an albino cat. Albino is the complete lack of pigmentation anywhere on the entire cat. These cats are incredibly rare, what usually happens is that the cat's normal color is actually masked. color masking happens in two ways, by white spotting(piebalding), which is caused by the gene SS, and Dominant white, which is caused by the gene W. White spotting causes the cute mittens or white belly on the cat. In some more extreme cases, white spotting causes a van pattern, or a complete masking of the cat's color over the entire body. Dominant white is like white spotting, except there's nothing restricting it to a certain area like with white spotting, so it just masks everything again. The cat could really be any color underneath, and if they breed with another cat who wasn't white through masking, none of the kittens will be white. The real downside to it, is that most white cats, whether they be albino or not, can be blind, deaf, or both. Did you know?
Male cats cannot be calico. check it out! There are two genes that control gender, X and Y. combinations of these two genes are the deciding factor. This is true for both cats, humans, and many other animals. XX is the combination for female, and XY is the combination for male. In cats only the X gene carries a color allele, and since the calico pattern requires two color genes, (black and orange), that means theoretically male cats cannot be calico because they only receive one color allele. In rare cases, there is an exception to this rule. Occasionally cats are born with a defect, or mutation known as Klinefelter syndrome. klinefelter syndrome occurs when a male receives an extra X with his Y, creating the abnormal XXY combination. The extra X gene provides the extra color gene necessary for the calico pattern. The downside to this is that most cats with this condition are usually sterile Did you know?
The cat breed, "Pixie bob," has the highest rate of kittens born polydactyl? That means they're born with extra toes! Check it out! The Pixie-Bob is an amazing cat breed categorized by their wild appearance and, "bobbed," or shortened, tail. The original cats, born with tails like these, were found in barns across north america. Eventually, a breeder named Carol Ann Brewer, adopted one of these, specifically a male, polydactyl, bob tailed kitten. She bred this cat with another, and found that his kittens(one of which she named Pixie, hence the breed name.) also had this abnormality. She later popularized the breed, and it was recognized officially only about ten years later. The majority of Pixie-Bob cats today are polydactyl due to their ties to the original polydactyl tom-cat. |
